Home battery installer for the Tweed Valley, Northern Rivers and Gold Coast
Thomson Energy installs home batteries in Murwillumbah, the Tweed, Byron Shire, Lismore and across the border on the Gold Coast, either as part of a new solar system or as a retrofit to the solar you already have. We've been building battery systems since the off-grid days, long before they were a mainstream product, and it shows in how they're installed.

Sigenergy SigenStor is our standard for grid-connected homes: a hybrid inverter and stackable battery modules in one unit, with fast blackout switchover, optional DC EV charging and a good app. It starts at 9 kWh and grows in modules, so a 9 kWh system today can be 18 or 27 kWh later. XESS is the value pick, an Australian-based brand using prismatic lithium iron phosphate cells. MPS (Mictronix Power Systems) is Australian-made LiFePO4 storage for hard duty cycles, our choice on big off-grid builds. We've also installed BYD storage on commercial sites.
What a home battery costs in the Northern Rivers
| System | Typical installed range* |
|---|---|
| 9 kWh battery retrofit to existing solar | $9,500 to $12,500 |
| 18 kWh battery retrofit | $14,000 to $18,000 |
| 27 kWh battery retrofit | $19,000 to $24,000 |
| 10.2 kW solar + 9 kWh battery, new system | $18,500 to $21,500 |
| 13.2 kW solar + 18 kWh battery, new system | $26,000 to $30,000 |
| Whole-home backup + EV charging | From $25,000 |
Those ranges already include the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount, which currently takes roughly 30 per cent off the battery and steps down again on 1 January 2027. NSW homes can usually stack the state's Peak Demand Reduction Scheme incentive on top by joining a virtual power plant, worth a few hundred to around a thousand dollars depending on battery size. We confirm the exact figures in writing on your quote, because both move with the market. See the FAQ for the detail.
Is a battery worth it here?
For most homes in the Tweed and Northern Rivers, yes, and for two reasons. The financial one: feed-in tariffs are now a few cents per kilowatt-hour while evening power costs 35 to 45 cents, so the solar you export at midday is worth far more stored and used at night. A right-sized battery with the current discount typically pays back in six to nine years and lasts well beyond that. The practical one: this region loses power. The 2022 floods and ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred in 2025 left parts of the Tweed and Northern Rivers dark for days. One of our customers ran through four days of outages after Alfred on a 16 kWh Sigenergy system and barely noticed.
The honest caveat: a battery only pays if it's sized to how you actually use power. A 27 kWh bank on a household that uses 12 kWh a night is wasted money, and a 9 kWh battery that's flat by 9pm is a disappointment. We size from your bill and your night-time load, and we'll tell you if the numbers don't add up.
Retrofitting a battery to existing solar
If you already have solar, you've got two options. An AC-coupled battery sits alongside your existing inverter and works with almost any system. Or, if your inverter is older, we replace it with a Sigenergy hybrid, which usually makes more sense once an inverter is past eight or ten years. Either way we check your switchboard, your export limit and your existing Essential Energy or Energex connection, and lodge the network application for the battery. In NSW, new battery installs are also covered by the Emergency Backstop rules from late 2026, which we handle as part of the connection.
Backup power: what actually stays on
Not every battery keeps the house running in a blackout, and the ones that do need the backup circuits wired properly. We set up a backed-up circuit group covering fridge, lights, internet, a few power points and, where the battery is big enough, the air conditioner or pump. For whole-home backup we size the inverter and battery to carry the lot. Ask us what you want running in an outage and we'll design it around that.

"Jasper and the team installed a 7kW solar system with a 16kW Sigenergy battery on our house when our old system died. Our electricity bill dropped from $250+ a month to $9, and we had power through 4 days of grid outages when Cyclone Alfred hit. Easy to deal with, turned up on time, and the app is super easy to use."
Debbie Gallard · Google review"Jasper and crew installed our 20kW solar system with 32kW of batteries, upgraded our switchboard and installed 2 air conditioners with minimal fuss. Workmanship and communication were first class. This is the second job Thomson Energy have done for us and the result is exactly what we wanted. 100% recommended!"
