Solar and battery installer in Murwillumbah

Thomson Energy is Murwillumbah's local solar, battery and electrical contractor. Our workshop is at Fernvale on Tweed Valley Way, ten minutes south of town, and our electricians have been working on Murwillumbah roofs and switchboards since 2011. Residential solar, home batteries, off-grid systems, commercial solar and general electrical work, all designed and installed by our own licensed team.

Work we've done in Murwillumbah

  • TVAC, Murwillumbah: a 90 kW Winaico solar array on Fronius inverters with 50 kWh of BYD battery storage, big daytime loads offset by solar with storage carrying the site into the evening. We also did the complete electrical fit-out of the college's new Industrial Arts Building: power, lighting, data and machinery circuits.
  • Homes across town and the surrounding valley: solar, solar and battery, battery retrofits and switchboard upgrades on everything from older weatherboard Queenslanders with tin roofs to new builds on the edges of town.

Local network notes

Murwillumbah is on the Essential Energy network. A standard residential connection comes with a 5 kW export limit on single phase, and the same per phase on three phase, which is plenty for a 6 to 10 kW system once you're using most of the power yourself. Essential Energy is introducing flexible export limits, up to 10 kW on single phase when the network has room, from late 2026, and we can apply for one where it helps. Older parts of town often have single-phase supply and older switchboards; we check both before we quote so there are no surprises on install day.

Power reliability matters here. Murwillumbah lost supply for days during the 2022 floods and again when ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred came through in March 2025. That's the main reason home batteries with backup have become the most common system we install in town: a properly set up Sigenergy system keeps the fridge, lights, internet and a few power points running until the grid comes back. If your home is in a flood-affected street, we'll also talk about mounting the inverter and battery high, or upstairs, rather than at ground level.

Travel and service

We're ten minutes away, which means site visits are easy to book, we can be there the same day for a fault, and we're close for service after the install. There's no travel charge for Murwillumbah jobs. We also cover the villages around town: South Murwillumbah, Condong, Tumbulgum, Dunbible, Stokers Siding, Dungay, Eungella and Bray Park.

What Murwillumbah homes usually need

Most households in town land on a 6.3 kW or 10.2 kW Winaico and Sigenergy system, typically $6,500 to $12,500 installed, and increasingly add a 9 or 18 kWh battery with the federal discount applied. Hinterland properties around town with long overhead lines often go bigger on storage, and some go off-grid altogether. Prices and packages are on the systems and pricing page; the FAQ covers rebates, export limits and timing.

★★★★★

"Jasper and the team installed a 7kW solar system with a 16kW Sigenergy battery on our house when our old system died. Our electricity bill dropped from $250+ a month to $9, and we had power through 4 days of grid outages when Cyclone Alfred hit. Easy to deal with, turned up on time, and the app is super easy to use."
