Solar after the floods

Lismore's 2022 flood changed how we install in the city and along the Wilsons River. On flood-affected properties we put inverters, batteries and switchboards above the known flood level, which usually means upstairs, on a raised platform or on the high side of a block, and we run the solar cabling so a flooded ground floor doesn't take the system with it. For raised and rebuilt homes under the resilient homes programs, we work with your builder on where the electrical infrastructure goes before the walls go up. If you're rebuilding, this is the time to add solar and a battery, because the wiring is cheapest while everything's open.

Nimbin, The Channon and the hills

The Nimbin district has been living with off-grid and hybrid power longer than almost anywhere in Australia. There are a lot of ageing stand-alone systems out there, many with lead-acid banks at the end of their life, and a lot of multiple occupancy communities sharing one connection. We replace and upgrade old off-grid systems with Victron inverters and Australian-made MPS lithium iron phosphate batteries, design new stand-alone systems for properties where Essential Energy's connection cost doesn't stack up, and build grid-connected solar and battery systems with backup for the villages that do have supply but lose it in every big storm: Nimbin, The Channon, Dunoon, Blue Knob and Tuntable Falls.

Local network notes

Lismore and the surrounding villages are on Essential Energy, with a 5 kW export limit on a standard single-phase connection and flexible limits up to 10 kW arriving from late 2026. Lismore's older suburbs and the hill villages are largely single phase, and the feeders out to Nimbin and The Channon are long and exposed. Commercial sites above 30 kW, like Goonellabah, go through Essential Energy's embedded generation process, which we manage end to end including export limiting and protection settings.

Travel and service

Lismore and Goonellabah are about 55 minutes from our workshop at Fernvale via Murwillumbah and Uki, and Nimbin about 50 minutes over the range. We schedule Lismore-area jobs in runs so there's no travel charge for standard residential and commercial work. Off-grid systems are monitored remotely so most issues are diagnosed without a site visit.
