Residential solar installer in Murwillumbah, the Tweed and the Northern Rivers

Thomson Energy designs and installs rooftop solar for homes across the Tweed Valley, Tweed Coast, Byron Shire, Lismore and the Gold Coast. We're licensed electrical contractors, not a sales company with subcontracted installers, so the people who quote your system are the people who put it on your roof.

What we install

Every residential system we sell is built the same way: Winaico BDX Midnight panels with a 30-year product warranty, a Sigenergy hybrid inverter so a battery can be added later without replacing anything, and switchboard, cabling and protection done to AS/NZS 3000, 5033 and 4777 by our own electricians. We handle the Essential Energy or Energex connection application, the export limit, the STC rebate paperwork and the inspection.

Most homes land on one of three sizes. A 6.3 kW system suits couples and small households. A 10.2 kW system covers a family with air conditioning and a pool pump. A 13.1 kW system is for larger homes, electric hot water, an EV charger or a battery down the track. We size from your actual bill and usage pattern, not from a package list, so if the right answer for your roof is 8 kW, that's what we'll quote.

What residential solar costs in the Northern Rivers

SystemSuitsTypical installed range*
6.3 kW, Sigenergy 5 kW hybridCouples and small households$6,500 to $8,500
10.2 kW, Sigenergy hybridFamilies, air conditioning, pool$9,500 to $12,500
13.1 kW, Sigenergy hybridLarge homes, EV, future battery$12,000 to $15,500

Those prices are after the federal STC rebate, which we claim on your behalf, for a straightforward single-storey tin roof. Tile roofs, two-storey homes, switchboard upgrades and three-phase supply add to the cost, and we'll tell you exactly how much before you sign anything. Current package details are on the systems and pricing page.

Where we work

We're based at Fernvale, ten minutes south of Murwillumbah, and most of our residential solar work is within an hour of the workshop: Murwillumbah, Uki, Tyalgum and the Tweed Valley villages, Tweed Heads, Kingscliff and the Tweed Coast, Byron Bay and Mullumbimby, Lismore and Nimbin, Kyogle and the Gold Coast. NSW homes connect through Essential Energy and Gold Coast homes through Energex. We hold electrical contractor licences in both states.

Why a hybrid inverter, even if you don't want a battery yet

Most of the solar-only quotes you'll get in this region use a plain string inverter. It's cheaper on the day, and it has to be thrown away if you add a battery later. We fit Sigenergy hybrid inverters as standard because battery prices and incentives keep moving, and the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount makes adding storage a much smaller step than it used to be. With a hybrid inverter, adding a battery is a module on the wall and an afternoon's work, not a new inverter.

How an install goes

  1. Site check. We look at your roof, switchboard, supply (single or three phase) and your last few bills, and give you a written quote with the system drawn on your roof.
  2. Network approval. We lodge the Essential Energy or Energex connection application. Approval for a standard home usually comes back within a couple of weeks.
  3. Install day. A typical residential solar install is one day with a crew of two or three. Solar plus battery is one to two days.
  4. Inspection and switch-on. We arrange the meter change with your retailer, commission the system, set up the monitoring app with you and claim your STCs.

Townhouses, strata and new builds

Yes to all three. Strata and townhouse solar needs owners corporation approval and a plan for who owns which part of the roof; we've done it and can give you a proposal written for a body corporate. For new builds we work with your builder on conduit, switchboard space and three-phase supply before the slab goes down. More in the FAQ.

What customers say

Google reviews

★★★★★

"Jasper and the team installed a 7kW solar system with a 16kW Sigenergy battery on our house when our old system died. Our electricity bill dropped from $250+ a month to $9, and we had power through 4 days of grid outages when Cyclone Alfred hit. Easy to deal with, turned up on time, and the app is super easy to use."
