Off-grid solar installer for the Northern Rivers, Tweed hinterland and remote Australia

Off-grid is where Thomson Energy started, and it's still the work we're known for. We design, build and support stand-alone solar and battery power for homes, farms, sheds and remote properties, from a weekender in the Tweed hinterland to a 200 kWh three-phase system running an entire property in WA. Victron inverters, MPS batteries, our own electricians, and remote monitoring so we can support your system from the workshop at Fernvale.

Who goes off-grid around here

In the Northern Rivers it's usually one of three situations. A property where the nearest power pole is too far away and the Essential Energy connection quote runs into six figures, which is common in the hills behind Uki, Tyalgum, Nimbin, Kyogle and Main Arm. A property that has grid power but loses it often enough, and for long enough, that the owners want to be independent of it. Or a new build, shed or cabin where a stand-alone system is simply cheaper and quicker than bringing the grid in. We'll tell you honestly which camp you're in, because sometimes a grid-connected solar and battery system with backup is the better answer.

How we build them

Every off-grid system we install is built on Victron Energy inverter-chargers and charge controllers, the off-grid industry standard, with Australian-made MPS lithium iron phosphate battery banks or XESS storage on smaller systems, Winaico panels on roof or Clenergy ground mount, and Fronius AC-coupled solar where the array is large. Everything is monitored through Victron's VRM portal, which means we see the same data you do and can diagnose most problems remotely before anyone drives out.

Sizing is the whole job. We work from a load audit of what actually runs at your place, including the pump, the fridges, the welder in the shed and the air conditioner in February, then design for the worst run of cloudy winter days, not the average. Generator integration is standard on full-time homes, set up to start automatically only when the battery really needs it, so it runs a few hours a month rather than every evening.

Typical off-grid systems and costs

SystemSuitsTypical project range*
WeekenderCabins, sheds, holiday propertiesFrom $25,000
Full-time homeFamily homes, pumps, workshop$40,000 to $70,000
Large propertyMultiple buildings, three-phase, farm loadsFrom $80,000

A stand-alone system is a bigger spend than a grid-connected one because it has to carry you through the bad weeks, not just the sunny days. Measured against a long grid connection, or against twenty years of a generator's diesel and maintenance, it usually comes out well ahead. Full package details are on the systems and pricing page under Off-Grid.

Where we've done it

  • Myocum, Byron Shire. A large family home with a heated pool, air conditioning and an EV charger, fully off-grid since 2023: 24 kW of Winaico solar, two Victron Quattro 10 kVA inverter-chargers, Fronius AC-coupled and Victron RS 450/200 DC-coupled, 102 kWh of MPS storage and an auto-start PowerMaster generator.
  • Pilbara, WA. Remote station power: 37 kW Winaico ground-mount, 20 kVA Victron, 10 kW Fronius AC-coupled, 60 kWh MPS storage, engineered for desert heat.
  • Balingup, WA. 200 kWh three-phase off-grid: 45 kVA Victron, 50 kW of solar, 200 kWh MPS battery bank running an entire property with no grid at all.
  • Tweed hinterland and Northern Rivers. Full-time off-grid homes and weekenders around Uki, Tyalgum, Nimbin, Kyogle and the Byron hinterland, plus containerised and transportable systems for sites with no building to put the gear in.

More detail in the off-grid case studies. If your site has nowhere dry and ventilated for the inverters and batteries, look at the RAPTOR transportable solar skid, a fold-out Sigenergy and Winaico system on its own base that can be placed and running the same day.

Service after the install

Off-grid customers depend on us for power every day, which is the standard we hold everything to. We offer annual service checks, remote monitoring through VRM, and we answer the phone. If you've got an existing off-grid system from another installer that's playing up, we can take it on, assess it and bring it up to standard.
