TVAC, Murwillumbah: 90 kW solar, 50 kWh BYD storage and the Industrial Arts Building fit-out

The brief

Schools are an ideal solar load: classrooms, workshops, air conditioning and kitchens all draw heavily between 8am and 4pm, exactly when a rooftop array is producing. The college wanted to cut a large daytime power bill, carry some of that solar into the late afternoon and evening when the campus is still in use, and do it with a local contractor who would be around for the life of the system.

What we installed

• 90 kW Winaico solar array on the college roofs, using Winaico's commercial NCX modules on commercial racking engineered for the roof and wind region.
• Fronius three-phase inverters, with the Essential Energy embedded generation approval, export limiting and protection settings handled by us.
• 50 kWh BYD battery storage, charging from excess solar through the day and discharging into the afternoon and evening load.
• Full electrical fit-out of the new Industrial Arts Building: power, lighting, data and machinery circuits for a trade-training workshop, on Voltex and Clipsal switchgear and accessories, delivered as a complete commercial electrical package to the builder's program.

The outcome

Big daytime loads offset by solar, with storage carrying the site into the evening. The system is sized so that on a typical school day most of the campus load is met by the roof, and the battery takes the edge off the late-afternoon peak. The Industrial Arts Building was handed over as a finished, compliant commercial electrical installation ready for machinery.
